The Mesmerizing Art Behind Cotton Spinning

Location

Arba Minch, Ethiopia

Taught at eight years old by her mother who learnt it from her mother, her hands move with a practiced ease as she spins cotton fibers into thread using a spindle she rotates by hand, and the thread is wound around it as it is spun. Cotton spinning is a traditional craft that has been passed down from generation to generation in the Dorze tribe of Ethiopia. A craft only learnt by women, she spends most of her day doing, taking her materials wherever she goes gathering with other women to spin while telling stories and sharing knowledge. The process is not only a way of producing textiles, an important part of the community's identity but also a way of preserving the cultural heritage of the Dorze people. She smiles as the image is taken as a symbol of her pride in her work. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture of the Dorze tribe of Ethiopia.
